Stop Guessing: How to Audit On-Page SEO in 5 Minutes (Using Free Tools)

Are you tired of looking at your website traffic and wondering why you aren’t ranking? Most business owners try to fix SEO by “feeling” or making changes based on what looks nice.

Here is the reality: Google doesn’t care about your design; it cares about data.

In our latest breakdown, I walk you through how I audit on-page SEO in under 5 minutes using two free Chrome extensions—SEO Pro and SEO Quake. You don’t need expensive enterprise software to see why your competitors are winning; you just need to know what to look for.

1. Stop Using Headings for “Styling”

When I audit a client’s site, the first thing I check is the heading structure (H1, H2, H3, etc.). A common mistake I see is using headings just to make text look big or bold.

Headings are for structured data, not for aesthetics. They convey importance to Google.

  • H1: Your most important information.
  • H2: The primary pillars of your content. Most of these should be optimized with your keywords.
  • H3: Deeper insights or secondary thoughts to back up your H2s.
  • H4-H6: As far as the data goes, these play little to no role in ranking. If you are using them, you are likely just stylizing and wasting valuable space.

2. Check Your Word Count & Density

Once the structure is clean, I jump into SEO Quake to look at keyword density and overall word count.

I often see sites that are significantly under-indexed compared to the top-ranking competitors. If the #1 result has 1,200 words and you have 400, you aren’t giving Google enough context to understand “who, what, when, where, and why” your business matters.

However, there is a catch: density matters. If you repeat your primary keyword too many times in a short, thin piece of content, your density spikes to abnormal levels, which can hurt you. The goal is to provide enough content to be authoritative, while keeping keyword usage natural and aligned with what the current top results are doing.

The Bottom Line

SEO isn’t about magic—it’s about math. By analyzing the headings and keyword density of the sites currently dominating your niche, you can quickly identify the gaps in your own content.

Need a professional eye on your site? Stop asking yourself if your content is “good enough.” Run a competitor analysis with us, and let’s write something that actually ranks.
